how is this going to be policed i wonder, i gave up on firearms in WA when i moved there anyway.
I did a similar thing, but I decided I’d never go to WA because of their gun laws.
Is there some sort of DMZ at the border to the Fascist Wonderland?
Do people from the real world need a passport/visa?
Or a mental health check for wanting to go there?
Did the mob in charge actually get voted in?
They say we get the government we deserve, what sort of contest from hell did Westralians win to diserve this bumfuckery?
They overwhelmingly voted for a party… A democratically elected government. And I’m guessing most of them are happy with the choice. Govern me hoarded daddy. Just like Vic is about to be.
I have added replies in the quote
Don’t say that, you nearly had me convinced to move to VIC
I used to think Sovereigns were loons.
That opinion is being reviewed
We have tires in NSW mate, but Vic probably has the best gun laws in Australia despite the cocks that are running the place atm.
Yeah, i could handle a dick-tata running the place provided there is accountability in parliament that stops stupid legislation going through.
Hopefully they keep tight margins in Vic.
Im sure I wrote a whole Babylon Bee style dissertation on this and the WAPOL have copied it verbatim.
“I do not recognise the corporation of Australi -ACK”.
I work in mental health and find this extremely concerning
The prevailing view amongst medical people I work with is no-one should have access to a gun
It already takes months to get access to a good psychologist.
Being “evaluated” is not the same as opening up to get treatment and deal with your issues.
Ssaawa managed to sum up some other good points. I would add given the large part of the road toll is country drivers hitting a road train or tree without a seatbelt on and the use of cars as weapons both in Perth and overseas - when do we start having psych evaluation for drivers licensing?
Mandatory Mental Health Check - SSAAWA President Release
The latest attack on firearms owners in WA is the totally sensational and completely premature announcement by the WA Police Minister Paul Papalia of the proposal to introduce mandatory mental health checks on new and existing firearms owners in this State.
The SSAA WA supports all practical and considered measures employed to ensure the safety of the community with respect to firearms, however rejects yet another example of claimed consultation with the WA firearm community by the WA Police Minister on such a critical issue facing legislators in the re write of the WA Firearms Act.
Factually there were 389 suicides in WA in 2021 which would highlight a much greater issue at hand than the statistics quoted by the WA Police Minister citing 20 deaths by firearms last year without qualification.
Do those 20 deaths include the WA citizens killed by WA Police last year, who by all accounts were individuals suffering from a mental health episode at the time of their death ?
The McGowan Government has again failed in its promise to deliver the “ Gold Standard of Transparency“ with the Western Australian community and instead constantly rolls out the Police Minister to court the media pack with another inflammatory statement about elevating the premise of “Community Safety“ on the back of his biased personal view of firearms in the hands of private citizens.
Referencing statistics on domestic violence and gun crime from the United States is nothing short of contemptuous by the Minister and highlights a total lack of critical based assessment and consultation with the WA firearms industry by the McGowan Government, elected to represent all facets of the Western Australian community.
Is the Minister suggesting that our State, Commonwealth and Olympic Shooting representatives are now all potential threats to the Community? Simply because they are athletes that chosen to ply their skills in International Competitions, proudly representing their state and country, yet will now be subjected to ongoing mental health assessments by government appointed doctors along with 85,000 other licensed and law-abiding firearm owners in this state that actively embrace the ACT-BELONG-COMMIT campaign at clubs and community activities every week.
Is the Minister also so widely misinformed that he believes the only place for firearms is in the hands of farmers, yet is part of a government that fails catastrophically in its ability to provide adequate health services to farmers and rural communities, including critical areas of mental health support, often resulting in heartbreaking criminal incidents playing out in the regions as so gloriously highlighted in the two-page feature by the Sunday Times.
NGO’s and community sporting groups including the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia WA and the Men’s Regional Health Initiative are left to finance the provision of mental health services to the regions with our annual $20,000 donation mental health services through the Red Card for Rabbits and Foxes programme.
Its pathetic…when are they going to stop making LAFOS feel like 2nd class citizens! If it becomes National, it could be the straw that broke the camels back for me…
Are the WA Stasi going to be required to undergo mental health checks too to be able to have firearms?
Mental heath problems are huge in the PO PO
and emergency services sector, not to mention domestic violence.
The biggest issue with this change is it will stop people seeking treatment, stop them being honest and open and force people to essentially lie and tell evaluators whatever they want to hear.
Reckless , invasive and stupid plan.
The fact this is so absurd, again shows the intent isn’t anything about public safety but about reducing firearm ownership in the state.
Yes its the “hidden” agenda of trying to reduce firearm owners, by putting a positive spin on their agenda! This country is fucked!
It’s a stunt.
I’ve performed thousands of mental health assessments.
Even patients with schizophrenia can pass them unless the clinician builds trust and proves the questions are about helping the individual.
You think anyone is going to walk in and trust these people?
Do you have any thoughts of harming yourself or others? No
Do you ever see things that are not there? No
Do you ever hear things other people cannot hear? No
Ever smell or taste strange smells or tastes? No
Do you think other people can plant thoughts in your head or that you can read the thoughts of others? No
Do you ever get special messages from the TV, newspaper or radio that are just meant for you? No
There’s a couple more questions along those lines… do you think are people out to get you? No, just the police minister.
Congrats you just passed a basic mental health assessment.
What a load of fucking bollocks.
Part of the rewrite they are working on is annual mental health checks. Not going to end up well for farmers. To keep guns they are going to have to pretend all is well when seeing a doctor.
For the numbers of people that are lost from suicide with firearms, there are many saved through mateship and having a hobby to live for.
You’re all fucked, seeing as how you’d have to be nuts to live there and put up with the already bullsit gun laws now.
