@The-Dugong my wife’s got it into her head that we should move back to Townsville (won’t be for a few years anyway). How hard is it to get onto properties to hunt up that way?
I’ve been spoiled down here in Victoria being able to hunt SF.
Townsville is pretty good. SSAA range has a good bunch of blokes. As for properties, they are a little hard to come by unless you know someone, just like most places I’d say. I have just managed to get onto a place up on the river so should be the normal pigs and chital there. Normally I head up to the Gulf a few times a year.
Cool, I told the wife if we moved back that we’d need to buy a big enough place that I can shoot at home too.
Sounds fair mate. That’s the perfect solution.
So, here’s an interesting question. How big is “big enough” to shoot on. We have buying a property on our wish list, and one of my criteria is, “must be big enough to shoot on”. I don’t mean the occasional shot with a 22lr … Clearly the topography of the property and neighbours are key considerations, but I’m curious as to what you consider “big enough”. Serious question, not pot stirring…
I’d like 100 acres personally with a 100m range and the ability to shoot clays off the porch.
But I don’t know about the legality of property size and shooting in Queensland.
Yep, 1 acre wide by 100 acres long lol.
Well take Victoria as an example there are some guidelines hidden in the act or regulations. That stupid target shooting one is where some hints can be taken from. Like that shooting must be 250m from the neigbours house. I think an ideal size would be about 120 A at about 600m wide by 1 km long and of course the right topography to give you good backdrops on the long side.
It can certainly work on properties much smaller but you do rely on good neigbours more. Which means not abusing epa sound limits and making sure they feel safe.
Climbed the picaniny near dunkeld this arvo with my daughter and her friend.
In the background there is mt abrupt which we are going to hike up tomorrow.
Nice views from there.
Looks like it will be a big day tomorrow as that looks like a decent climb.
It will be a couple of hours each way, about 6.5k roundtrip but pretty steep climb in parts I think so lots of stops with the girls
Ment to be lots of red deer but can’t take a gun, I’ll have a knife though so maybe I’ll have kill one in self defence, Lol!
I have heard that red deer have a nasty habit of committing suicide by running into sharp objects.
6.5k, the girls will probably run to the top and back down to meet you half way up.
Well they would if I was hiking lol.
Property is pretty cheap in QLD. If you just want to ‘shoot’, then 100ac is probably enough, so long as there is a good hill or gully to create a backstop. As for hunting, I think you need more. My place is around 200ac and probably not big enough to have a real hunt on (culling wallabies is not hunting in my book). If some of these local pesky deer would establish themselves you might have a good go in the bush gullies but getting a good shot without risk of the bullet carrying to the next property might be tricky.
Not that it makes much difference seeing as there is no hunting around there anywhere, but I’m pretty sure I heard a red stag calling when I was climbing Mt Abrupt today near dunkeld.
First time I’ve ever heard one.
Have any of you guys hunted in the Grampians area?
Mate. 95% of the Reds in the area are in Nat Park.
But there is a couple of areas.
If your keen we can chat next time i see you.
Yeah sounds good mate
I feel very healthy this morning.
I hope what ever you got up to yesterday you had a good day and took a moment to stop and reflect.
At your age, you could have started with “I am not dead yet” and we would have applauded. This, I am feeling very healthy bullshit, this is some next level-up wizardry.
Someone ought to poke @Bogong with a poking stick, make sure he’s still moving or something.
I am bored and that D word. Had my back surgery and now in Rehab hospital missing the family and all those gun related things.
Before going into hospital I did a 5 day rifle comp which was a complete failure as far as being competitive goes due to a big equipment failure. I will post some pictures when I get home. I still managed to compete using some borrowed equipment which meant a different shooting technique.
Whinge over.
