Have shot those. Hot as fuck. Really hot rounds. Corrosive and will need to fully strip and clean the gun. usually with boiling water or cloudy ammonia (soap with ammonia). I use cloudy ammonia, because boiling water cleaning hell is a special kind of hell reserved for BP guns.
I recon, $400 is a fair price for that can, today. Purely for ‘to keep’ value. too much pain in the arse to clean that shit. And cases are not really re-usable.
Unless you’re collecting them, I’d buy an Australian or British. Savage is Canadian issue I think. Which is like, OK, for Canadians (wrong, see below). If you want something neat and cool, Australian or British is the way to go, I think.
Savage were manafactured for England, made in America and shipped to Europe.
The Canadian version is a “Longbranch”. Made by Canadians, for Canadians. Arguably one of the rarer .303’s in Australia and often attract a small premium.
BSA, Lithgow etc are much of a muchness and it all depends on individual rifle condition.
Ishapore are Indian, made on British equipment, too British standards. Often looked down on as sh1t, they are actually just fine.
The Savage lend/lease program was a bureaucratic farce. Word games to maintain American “Neutrality” , when it was pretty clear who’s side they were on.
I’m not too bothered about collecting them. I just want something that has a bit of history, and that I can shoot reliably, though I doubt I’m going out to Little River that much.
I’m not super bothered about sporterised stocks, but I think I would want something unscoped. Someone mentioned to me that Swedish Mausers were also a good way to get into Milsurps.
You have to go with a Lithgow its just one of those things that every bloke should have. I have two but both were fitted with target barrels and the original sights removed. I am only the second owner of them since they were bought from the government. Still have the paperwork with them.
I would like to get a 100% original although most of them dont shoot for shit.
