Is it smaller than .50 cal?
No, much older
No, but I concede ignition type
No, larger than 50cal
Is it a 577 Snider?
No, Wombat has determined it is rimfire.
Ahh missed that bit
Is it a 56-50 Spencer?
No, a bit smaller.
Is it from the American Civil War era/used in?
Is it a .54 Ballard?
From that era, but not used in, that I know of.
No, but it has been confused with that cartridge, even by some so-called experts. The cartridge will not load in the Ballard even though it is very close.
What about a .52 Sharps and Hankins?
OK, time to narrow things down, it is not American, it has been confused with the 54 Ballard but is not, my area of collecting is Military Small Arms, 1950 to 1850. I will call it tomorrow when I get home from work if it isn’t gone by then. Cheers
It would be a 13.9mm Wanzel, from around 1867. Manufactured in Austria for use in the Austrian Model 1854 rifle converted to breechloading using the Wanzl system.
Spot on 1Fatman, not cheap to get one either. There was a centrefire version made for target shooters at some point apparently, but I’ve never seen a centrefire conversion of these rifles.
It wasn’t easy to find.
7.7x54mm???
