I wonā€™t get hipster kudos because i would be shooting a deer and that would just be too distressing for hipsters.

You could shoot them ironically with a vegetarian sausage

A 120gn (8g) slug would have to be travelling roughly 600fps at 100m to deliver 1350 joules at that range.

That sounds achievable.

It does but i wouldnā€™t know because i know nothing about loading for shot guns!

1350 joules = 995.7 foot pound.

I just used a calculator on my mobile.

If you know the bc, weight and speed should be able to plug the numbers into a on line ballistic calculator.

Ballistic coefficiency is not a term Iā€™ve seen used in conjunction with any shotgun slug before, lol. Slugs are more like throwing bricks than any kind of well designed rifle bullet.

A round nosed slug would translate roughly as a G1 BC, i think.

Could you use a 45 long colt bullet as a 410 slug?

without a rifled barrel to stabilise it, it would not be very acurate. with a smooth bore you need a nose heavy projectile to get the drag stabilisation, you could experiment with gluing felt wads to the back to get the drag?

no Worries I have a couple of boxes of factory stuff. i will bring the string. @Oldbloke is that going to be the tree we tie the gun to?

So I totally get the idea of using brass cases instead of plastic. What are the options for replacing the wad, that bothers me more than the case because at least I can put the fired case in my pocket and reuse it a few times. The wad though ends up somewhere in the grass/dirt/rocks and is a one use only option.

Cheers

Seems felt and cork are commonly used.

and even just cardboard box and uht milk carton

I need some more guidance hereā€¦ One of the ā€œhow toā€ that you guys have been banging out lately would be awesomeā€¦

Probably wonā€™t be till next week, but Iā€™ll take some picā€™s and write something up.

That would be great. Iā€™d really love to be passing hand loaded .410 in brass cases to my boy rather than blasting bits of plastic all across the paddock. The next thing would of course be Iā€™d have to step up and run brass cases through my Rossi 12g coach gun
