Game: Guess that cartridge

Not for underwater and not really a sabot round but I guess some would put it into that category.

45 cal cartridge with 30 cal projie of some sort. Weird, weird and weird what’s it used for @1Fatman

Not a 45 calibre, it is shot from a rifle.
It’s a bit hard to say what it was used for without giving it away, but let’s say sneaky type people would use it, a sort of 007 deal.

Russian then.

Yep Russian Invented

Nah American invented early 1900’s but not developed.

Ahh developed by the Russians in the mid 50’s

" author was able to find an US patent No 692,819, dated back to 1902"

The link may give the game away.

They look like two different rounds, but I’ll take a guess that the bottom one is 7.62x39?

Very close

Yep spot on.
Here is a bit on it.

Silent Ammunition

This was a special cartridges for silent-flameless ammunition/weapon developed by the soviets in the mid 1950s by request of the KGB. NM Elizarov’s team, developed a special subsonic bullet for the 7.62x39 cartridge. It was adopted for service in 1962, and given the army designation “7.62 US” (US stood for reduced speed in Russian).
The bullet would be resting on a piston. When fired the piston would propel to bullet forward to a speed of 170m/s. The piston would stop at the end of the Cartridge, trapping the gasses inside of it.

Would be interested to hear one being shot to see how effective it was. A very clever design.

Is it one of the Tuba family?

That’s some sort of a 22 or 17 hornetty thing I recon or close to it

Looks like a 8x56R but mini

Maybe 38-56 WCF ?

Or a 8mm Kropatchek

Yes its a 22 something, no to all the other stuff.

I think it may be .220 Swift
Correction, 22 Hornet?
