Hi everyone. I am new to ownership and looking for a .22 tactical. I was reading online about the CZ 515 tactical and its rigidity issue related to its accuracy. A local gun shop is selling them for $1,595.00, including GST, and that’s the only .22 tactical I found online. Can anyone give me some input on if this rifle can be upgraded or fixed to overcome the reported issues? Also, are there any aftermarket accessories or locally made add-ons that you can recommend (e.g., extended lever release or magazine coupler)? Any feedback or recommendation on alternative tactical 22 thats approaved in NSW is appreciated. Thanks.
Hi @Driv3r welcome! I
think maybe take a step back and approach it like you would anything else. Is this microwave the best at cooking my burgers? See where I am going with this? I am sure average, box of ammo a year Australian shooter knows way more about rifles than Cz with over 90 years of manufacturing experience, their engineers are shit, and generally, Cz has a really poor reputation in the firearms community.
Usually, people who complain are the people who either broke theirs trying to make it “betterrer” or can’t afford one and for some morbid reason trying to persuade themselves that it’s poo.
The rifle is fine as is. It will lose zero after complete strip and cleaning, but that’s neither here nor there. I guess the question you got to ask yourself is, is my Tipan accurate? this is the same type of gun. It’s a fun run-and-gun gun, not a bench rest gun. So tool for purpose. Quite accurate and hyper reliable.
Stop listening to fuds. A few of us here shoot practical comps (think IPSC) with it, it’s about as good as it gets.
First question you got to ask yourself is, what do you want it for? It’s not a benchrest gun, it’s a fun gun, for proper plinking. Pick it up, shoot it on the move, move with it. Being glued to the bench - you may as well get a CZ457 in whatever variant that tickles your fancy.
I have 3, so you know, that should tell you something

Not true. Wouldn’t be selling for that kind of money if it did. And used gun sites would be flooded. Common sense here.
A local gun shop is selling them for $1,595.00, including GST, and that’s the only .22 tactical I found online.
That’s all there is, plus a wood variant if you can find one. Rest are bolt actions. You could also look at t-bolt, but they don’t make chassis for them anymore. Personally, I would go 515.

There are no issues LOL Shops tend to not sell broken guns. CZ especially.
are there any aftermarket accessories or locally made add-ons that you can recommend (e.g., extended lever release
Yes, scroll used guns, you will see one. Dude in Melbourne.
or magazine coupler
No, you will need to diy or design/print some.
Any feedback or recommendation on alternative tactical 22 that’s approved in NSW is appreciated.
Again, depends on what you’re after. Bolt or lever release. Or lever.
I think you need a use case here. If you are a bench shooter, this is a fun gun, but you won’t REALLY enjoy it. If you can stand up and shoot it from weird positions, then this is definitely a fun gun. A few of us shoot mini-rifle IPSC style comps with it, it’s not something I would consider with a bolt action.
What do you want it for?
Great feedback, thank you. I’m not a bench shooter; I pretty much walk with the rifle. When I went to buy the Taipan, the shop owner also put the CZ 515 Tactical on the glass and said, “Here is also a fun .22,” and I liked it. But when I went home and saw the YouTube video and some feedback about the 515, it made me worried. I’m not the type who would take time to clean guns, so I have to get the shop to clean and zero it for me. I would like to get a red dot and magnifier for the CZ and potentially a larger magazine. It was so easy to find accessories for the taipan though.
Nah, don’t worry about YouTube, sample of 1.
Re magnifier and a dot, I wouldn’t do that. Only cool in movies.
Either get a dot; or LPVO; or x3 prism. Personally, I run dot on one tactical and x3 prism on the other (claimed by my offspring, that’s why we have a few). And American version has a x7 Leupold, it’s a nice woody Because why not.
515 is THE walk around gun. End of discussion.
A quality bolt action is more accurate.
They will never be the same.
Get a decent 1-6, 1-8 LPVO
Dots are good for plinking, on a .22, a dot is a bit limiting for hunting.
Dots will never be as precise as a magnified scope.
Magnifers with a dot are stupid, heavy compromise.
They just look cool
I’ve tried mag couplers, they are stupid, look cool but just make your gun profile stupidly large and awkward.
There is no realistic hunting scenario in Australia short of rare occasions where you will get more than 5 rounds off without everything being dead or scattered
Get a 515
Put a 1-6 LPVO on it
Buy a few 15 round mags
Be happy
I have 2, a timber and a Tac.
The video you refer to is the most uneducated load of shite that I have watched in a while and is a textbook example of the Dunning-Krueger effect.
For the record , I have a pretty decent collection of firearms and have had the discussion with other enthusiasts “If you could only own one brand of firearm for pistols and rifles what would it be?”
The common answer is CZ.
I have 5 different CZ’s and they are all best in class for what I own.
I’m a SIG Fanboi and CZ’s are better.
Damn you @Supaduke! Now I have to measure!
call waiting music
6! ha! LOLLLLLLL You should chuck p10 into handgun thread, I didn’t think I would enjoy it as much as I have.
Thanks again. I will go ahead with the CZ. I’m not sure if I can use a 15-round magazine in NSW (hence the couplers), but I will look into it. I’ve used my friend’s Taipan X with a Holosun 510c and an Eotech G33, and it was easy to get used to. For the CZ, I’ll look into a 1-6 LPVO. Any recommendations on brands? Cheers.
Budget?
Probably around $500-$600ish. I was looking at Votex Venom 1-6×24.
I personally had enough of Vortex, I have a few of them, purchased when they were cheap. It’s a budget brand, no matter what hipsters say. Vortex charges quite a bit, but they have all hallmarks of a cheap scope:
- very heavy (500gm+ You don’t think it’s a lot, but it’s very very a lot, especially for offhand shooting).
- expensive
- glass is very middle of the road, clear, but it’s an LPVO, you won’t get dawn/dusk shooting with it, it’s good enough.
Like it’s neither here, nor there, it’s fine, but not for the price! If you want something like that, look at
Vector Optics Grimlock 1-6x24sfp. Maybe @Supaduke can give a bit of feedback here, I really liked his, I think it’s the same one. Glass to me felt crisper. Scope it self is lighter.
If you want to spend on something nice, look at VX-Freedom 1.5-4x20 (REEDOM, Pig Plex) on Cleavers. Much better quality, comparable price and half the weight.
Anyone who buys Vortex these days at their current prices is a sucker, in my opinion anyway.
p.s.
and a sexy one-piece mount from Ali Express/Temu/eBay. Yes, it is a 22, no it won’t matter. Cheapest shit that looks best to you They all work the same on 22s
Why a coupler? Just carry a couple of spare magazines. In my experience - with my 515 steel magazines are easier/ faster to change. Factory magazines are the best.
In any case you’ll burn through ammo quicker than you think possible. Sore fingers from filling mags are the norm after a plinking session.
@Wombat Im using a coupler for my Taipan x with PMAG Gen3 magz and its very easy to use a quad coupler where you mount two x 20 magz side by side. I realise the 515 has a very small magazine and its just easier to get a few 15 round mags and carry them.
Quick question mate. I still havent picked up my CZ 515 Tactical from the shop. Its waitng on PTA approval but its fully paid for $1595.00. I have a feeling that its the first model with fixed stock. I’m wondering if I should ask for the later model thats Mlok compatible and improved. What say you? Cheers
So this depends. Personally, this is subjective… I like the tactile feel of first models A LOT more than newer ones. Like on that alone, I’d go with this model.
However! At some point you may want a bipod or vertical grip. I tried them all btw, not my thing on 515. But, if you do, you will need a very specific 2" rail. ATI something. This guy:
I’d get 2" and 4" because you won’t find them again, because forend/shroud changed, so ones they are out - they are out, and importing is quite cost prohibitive on something this small.
Or you go for the newer one with mlok, which serves little purpose on a 22, but easily accessorised.
Personally, i have a 2" rail, but i took all of thr accessories off, just didn’t do it for me. On rare occasion i shoot it for groups/sighting in, i.just use a sandbag and a rear bag (my 10yo explore sock filled with plastic pallets).
