I cleaned more guns today. Pheww. Now just need to do a few more (like half a day more lol) and I am up to date. lmao

How have people been finding home schooling. A friend I spoke too their children one was going to kinder like nothing had happened and the other was doing all classes on line with the teacher.
My daughters school is only doing two 10-15 min online catch ups a week.the rest is pick up worksheets and books from the school every two weeks and parents are left to work it out. There are some reading and maths programs online they are involved with.
I have struggled with some old laptops of 2012 vintage Both HP 6550b I7s setting them up as they were used for sales people at work. One that I set up nicely has developed a display driver crash which happens at the most inconvenient time. I took it appart and found the thermal grease had all dried up and was not much help. That has not completely fixed the problem. I think the connections ribbon cables and memory contacts may be causing problems so that will come apart again.
The other is much more stable and I thought it had no problems but today the same issue appeared. I think it is hardware connections but it may also be new windows updates that are conflicting. Both are running windows 7 and are more than fast enough to do the job.
I am spending about 4 hours a day doing one on one learning trying to keep the attention on the job at hand not looking out the window or drifting off to some other mind space. Its hard to get the balance of Dad this is too easy and I dont want to do that it is too hard.
How are others faring?: Any tips? I am not into this new fun based learning or art and music based type of learning that the school is spooking
I have bought some paints and colouring in type books that can be used with markers, pencils or paint. Perhaps some other art if I can keep my patience in tact…
I have a daughter at high school and one doing a TAFE course, the TAFE is easy to deal with, she just plods along and we leave her to do it how she sees fit, she’s often doing schoolwork at 3am and sleeping half the day.
The other one logs onto the computer in the morning her work and whatever reference material is there and she smashes it out hands it in on line, some days only takes her an hour then she makes them stupid tictoks all day.
I’m a teacher, but I teach secondary. We are teaching half our lessons each via Zoom and the others via a chat function. Work goes up on Google Classroom on Monday morning and kids work through it piece by piece in their regular class time.
It really shows which students are motivated to learn. So many are already too far behind because they just haven’t turned up to the online classes or done the work.
I get it with year 9s and 10s. They are doing my subject because the curriculum says they have to and it might not be their thing. So, when given a chance, they’re going to bail. However, I get super worked up about VCE kids who have chosen my subject and now CBF. I think if students at that level don’t do work they should be removed from the class but I’m a bit old school like that.

Roughly speaking, what subject do you teach? Some subjects are just funny like that.
I remember when I was in school, a lot of kids were taking VCE maths subjects like Further and Methods even if they hated maths purely because pre-requisite scores needed for post high school aspirations. So many kids just did the bare minimum to get the score they needed.
On the other hand, I found that subjects that were difficult, as well as useless in terms of pre-reqs had a fairly motivated bunch. My Spesh maths class, and classics program was full of motivated kids, that were constantly pushing each other to do better.
I smell bullshit, @Tempestman - this is called <\insert ethnicity here> run. Literally, the only reason to do specialist maths during VCE is to boost your score. Nobody choooooses to do. My money is that your parents kept up pressure on education and kids (you and everyone else in your class) chose it to comply. And look how it turned out for you, a fucking disappointment, over 20 and not even a dentist! lmao
VCE I teach history and legal studies. Who goes into those subjects thinking they’ll be easy!?
My legal class is half footy boys because one of them wants to be a cop, and he’s doing well but then all his mates followed him in because they don’t know what they want to do.
Generally the kids are good in terms of behaviour. We have very few fights or anything like that but they just do not get what work looks like.

Lol, rents actually wanted me to do further instead - their belief was that I could get a better scaled score in further. I chose to do spesh because I wanted to learn about DEs. There were plenty of kids who were made to do the subject, but there was also loads doing it out of their own choice. They also definitely didn’t want me doing classics lol.

I think motivation sometimes just wanes because kids lose sight of what is at the end. I remember I got pretty burnt out at the end of Yr 12.
Does 3/4 History still have Revolutions? I remember being tempted to do the unit because my school did the French and Russian Revolutions.

Yes but we are the stubborn hold out and offer Australian History. Victoria is the last state to offer an Australian history subject which I find frustrating and it’s dying. It won’t be around for more than a few more years.
