Ask the Shotgun Experts

Ok I have used this shotgun several times now with modern 2 3/4 shotgun shells. I am still alive to write this. Not really being a shotgun shooter, I pretty much suck at it the once a year I give it a go.

I thought I may have a bit of a play with this gun so @no1mk3, @Keith and now @Oldbloke and anyone else that is a Black powder expert. could you please give me some recipes on creating some BP loads for this gun. I was thinking of using a brand new shell emptied out and rebuilt or if possible reload some used ones. Ideas fellas on loads that will work effectively ie kill a duck and make a lot of smoke and noise for the BP fun of it all.

G’day sungazer,
Hunting load using plastic cases (most plastic will be single use due to burning powder flakes putting holes in them)
trim case to 65mm if roll crimping, if you want to star crimp you will need to determine your wad column by experiment,
3 dram (82.0g) FFg powder, 1/8th" (3mm or so)overpowder card ( can use 3 weet bix cards), felt wad column appx 3/4" (19 - 20mm) for 1oz load or 5/8th to 11/16th (16 - 18mm) for 1 1/4oz of #6 shot,
overshot card should be stiff cardboard (I have used 1mm PVC punchings)
roll crimp, or squirt PVA wood glue around the edge of the wad. If you are loading brass shells PVA on the card is the normal way to hold them in place, and shot column height is irrelevant for brass shells.
Dram to Grains Appx. for FFg
2 3/4 = 75
3 = 82
3 1/4 = 89
3 1/2 = 96
3 3/4 = 102 MAXIMUM LOAD
these powder loads can be used for up to 1 1/4 oz of shot without exceeding 6360 LUP, well under the max for guns of that era in good condition.
I have taken rabbit, duck, quail (not really edible after a load of #6), pheasant and pigeon with BP loads in my 30" J.O.Mayne hammergun , have fun.

Sorry Mate, Im no help with that.

I use a 60 grain measure of 2FG, & I use the same measure for shot. I use leather wads because they pose no fire risk.
